Visby is the capital of the Gotland Island, one of the best preserved medieval cities of
Scandinavia and known for its fascinating historical beauty and charm as a small modern city,
which is teeming with parks, gardens and flowers.
Its history reflects its Viking past, flourishing medieval period and the growth of the powerful
Hanseatic League, although today Visby is equally known as the city of roses and ruins. Due to
its unique cultural values, in 1995 it was declared by Unesco as World Heritage of Humanity.
Since the end of the 19th century, the ruins of Visby have been protected as a historical
monument. The construction of dam began in the 12th century and the wall that surrounds city
(3.4 km long) was added in the 13th. Behind the wall, with its 44 watchtowers, this medieval
stone city waits to be discovered by you.
Our tour starts at the old Hanseatic port, now known as Almedalen Park, where you can enjoy a
spectacular view of the city. We will continue through Strandgatan, where we can see some of
the medieval gabled wineries. We will pass Kruttornet, "the gunpowder tower", which is the
oldest building in Visby. We will walk through the city, go up a narrow alleys until we reach the
Botanical Gardens. We will visit the St. Mary Cathedral, the German Church and walk through
some of the many ruins and narrow medieval streets to finish our journey.
