In the Middle Ages Amalfi had an artistically remarkable position. The cathedral of Sant'Andrea, the
convent of the Capuchin monks, the bell tower, and the great artistic wealth especially in the time of
the Normans. The Cathedral of S. Andrea of Amalfi, located in the center of the town on Piazza
Duomo, in Baroque style inside and Byzantine outside. Beautiful frescoes of saints including that of
S. Andrea which date back to the 11th century. century make it an obligatory destination in the
country. The statue of Sant'Andrea was sculpted by Michelangelo Naccherino, a pupil of
Michelangelo. Marble sculptures of Santo Stefano and San Lorenzo made by Pietro Bernini. The
relics of Sant'Andrea were brought from Constantinople to Amalfi by Pietro Capuano. Here in the
Cathedral there is the tomb which holds part of the apostle's relics.
In the past, the nobles of Amalfi were buried in the Cloister of Paradise, built by Augustariccio in the
mid-thirteenth century. century. Today, a real open museum with many pillars and artistic beauties
of the Middle Ages.
The republic of Amalfi also had its own structure (Arsenale della Repubblica) for the construction,
storage and repairs of its ships, at that time among the best equipped and much feared.
Amalfi offers not only beautiful landscapes with many historical hints but also tradition in the
construction of paper, at that time among the first producers in the sector in Europe. In the museum
(of paper in fact) you can admire the equipment of that time for the production of hand-made paper.
POSITANO
Positano, in the medieval port of the Republic after the mid-twentieth century. century, it was half of
many tourists and today it appears an obligation for lovers of the Amalfi coast. The church of S.
Maria Assunta, a must visit for anyone visiting Positano.
RAVELLO
Romantic landscapes with unique views and surroundings of mountains and hills adorned by the
many lemon plantations that with the many flowers make the country unique natural beauties.
Limoncello has roots here as well as in almost all the surrounding towns, Amalfi, Sorrento, Positano
etc.
