We collect you at the port of Zeebrugge and travel to Ghent. There we will complete a 3 hour sightseeing tour with a local guide. Ghent is situated at the confluence of the rivers Scheldt and Lys. Today it is the Flemish city with the greatest number of historical buildings, with a rich cultural scene and a privileged location. During the tour we will see the most notable sights in Ghent, such as the Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen), which was built in the late 12th century by Philip of Alsace. Located in the heart of Ghent, it served as a great defensive stronghold, allowing vision and control of the area from the top of the tower.
The Bell Tower was built in 1313 and symbolises the city's autonomy and the power of its medieval guilds. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. St. Nicholas church was built in the 13th century on the site of an older temple that burned down in 1176. It is a good example of the so-called Scheldt Gothic, with a noticeable vertical exterior facade that stands above the large buttresses and is flanked by towers.
The Graslei is, without doubt, one of the most magical places in Ghent and is greatly appreciated by its inhabitants. This port is full of medieval reminders with its terraces, historic buildings that are perfectly aligned, the romantic canal that kisses its banks and an authentic display of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance period architecture. All these features cause your mind to wonder back to ancient times as you stroll through the area.
St. Bavo Cathedral is a beautiful building that demonstrates a mix of Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque styles and is one of the must see attractions in the city. The City Hall in Ghent is a magnificent building with an exceptional variety of styles. At this point we will return to the port of Zeebrugge.
